Volcanoes In Focus

Hawaii owes its existence to a hot spot in the Earth's mantle that has changed location only slightly over the past 70 million years. Although Volcanoes made life possible here, the countless eruptions of hot magma and lava look less than welcoming.

Inspired By Beauty

"We live only to discover beauty. All else is a form of waiting."
- Kahlil Gibran

What is beauty?
Beauty is defined as the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or pattern, or something else less tangible.

Some people say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in nature, there many things that could be argued to have inherent beauty. The shimmer of sunlight on the ocean, the sound of a rushing waterfall, the aroma of a spring rose - the world is full of beauty we can experience day to day.

Photographer Of The Week Michael Howell

Photographer Of The Week Michael Howell

"Art photography is not about conveying the literal truth about the subject, but more the personal interpretation of the subject"

I look in a photograph for more than simply a record of how the subject is generally seen or perceived. Instead I prefer something which goes beyond this, adding input from the photographer, whether capturing an unusual effect of light or viewpoint or the depiction of the subject at a stage removed from reality. The latter objective is frequently (although not exclusively) assisted by the use of monochrome which reduces the elements in the picture to their base constituents of shape, texture, form and composition.
Where the purpose of the photography is for artistic rather then record purposes, manipulation of the image is therefore perfectly acceptable, indeed desirable, provided it is true to the subject matter and is neither excessive nor inappropriate. For me, an effective interpretation that emphasizes and enhances the subject is more...

New Photographer Jenna Szerlag

Pacific Stock is proud to introduce our newest contributor, Jenna Szerlag!
Her talent and explorations have created hundreds of breathtaking, inspiring and captivating images, and we've just added over 300 of them to our collection!

Having spent the first 22 years of her life amongst pastoral landscapes and the bitter winters of the Atlantic North East, it is hardly a surprise that Jenna was immediately captivated by the tropical island of Maui. So fascinated by her surroundings Jenna was soon driven to inspire others with her vision of the vibrant natural wonders she experienced each day.

Mostly self taught, she graduated from the New York Institute of Photography with special interest in Landscape Art. Jenna has traveled from coast to coast of the Continental United States and across varied landscapes of Europe, Alaska, Japan, Canada and Mexico. An explorer and an adventurer by heart, she embraces the natural aura and cultural nuances of each...

Photographer Of The Week Mary Van De Ven

Last Week's POTW, Mary Van de Ven!

"Photography has given me a heightened awareness and sensitivity
of myself, of my environment and of all life."
-Mary Van de Ven

Having received a Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the University of
Washington, Mary went to Paris to live and discovered photography was
an unlimited way to create images and a good way to travel.

Interested in space and form initially, living in Hawaii opened her eyes to
color and natural beauty. Mary has done commercial work in photo,
video and multi-image production and has traveled promoting Hawaii.
She now lives in the Pacific Northwest creating fine art and practicing a newly
discovered talent in healing and intuitive work for humans and animals.
