As described by Wikipedia, Hula dancing is a complex art form, and there are many hand motions used to represent the words in a song or chant. For example, hand movements can signify aspects of nature, such as the swaying of a tree in the breeze or a wave in the ocean, or a feeling or emotion, such as fondness or yearning. Foot and hip movements often pull from a basic library of steps including the kaholo, ka'o, kawelu, hela, 'uwehe, and 'ami.

Dolphins In Focus

Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals in the world; Mixing their aptitude with a friendly appearance and playful attitude have made dolphins a favorite to all. Playing is important to dolphins; they play-fight with others, and at times they harass other local creatures, such as turtles. Dolphins enjoy riding waves and frequently surf coastal swells and the bow waves of boats.

Inspired By Beauty

Inspired By Beauty

"We live only to discover beauty. All else is a form of waiting."
- Kahlil Gibran

What is beauty?
Beauty is defined as the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or pattern, or something else less tangible.

Some people say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in nature, there many things that could be argued to have inherent beauty. The shimmer of sunlight on the ocean, the sound of a rushing waterfall, the aroma of a spring rose - the world is full of beauty we can experience day to day.

Photographer Of The Week Michael Howell

Photographer Of The Week Michael Howell

"Art photography is not about conveying the literal truth about the subject, but more the personal interpretation of the subject"

I look in a photograph for more than simply a record of how the subject is generally seen or perceived. Instead I prefer something which goes beyond this, adding input from the photographer, whether capturing an unusual effect of light or viewpoint or the depiction of the subject at a stage removed from reality. The latter objective is frequently (although not exclusively) assisted by the use of monochrome which reduces the elements in the picture to their base constituents of shape, texture, form and composition.
Where the purpose of the photography is for artistic rather then record purposes, manipulation of the image is therefore perfectly acceptable, indeed desirable, provided it is true to the subject matter and is neither excessive nor inappropriate. For me, an effective interpretation that emphasizes and enhances the subject is more...

Allan Seiden Photographer Of The Week

March 8th, 2012

Allan Seiden Photographer Of The Week

Allan Seiden may be a familiar name to many Hawaii residents, for it is attached to numerous island publications. He is perhaps best known for his contributions to the visitor book industry with the publication of such titles as Fishponds to Warships, a Complete Illustrated History of Pearl Harbor (the best seller at the memorial for the past three years), Diamond Head, Hawaii's Icon and The Art of the Hula. Seiden has held parallel careers as both a journalist and a photographer in the islands since 1974, when he arrived in Hilo town with the $600 that sustained him for six months. He has come a long way since then.

Originally schooled as an historian (with Masters Degrees in both Russian History and Education), Seiden has been collecting Hawaiian and Asian vintage imagery via the camera lens for the past 25 years. He is innately attracted to historical imagery, and, it seems, to the people who catalogue it. "Over the years, there were a lot of people who were remarkably...

Stop And Smell The Roses

"I'd rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck" - Emma Goldman

"Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature" - Gerard de Nerva

"The Earth laughs in flowers" - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes life moves pretty quickly, and it can be all too easy to miss the natural beauty in the world, especially during the dreary winter months. But with Spring right around the corner, here is your chance to stop and smell the roses!

There are many varieties of flowers in Hawaii, from the classic rose to the more exotic varieties of the Plumeria, Lily and Orchid; all of them offer bursts of color and fragrant aromas. Tropical flowers such as Hibiscus, Anthurium and Bird of Paradise are all unique and each one even more beautiful than the last.

The right flower at the right time can put a smile on your face; each one reminds us of the delicate artistic character that exists in nature.

The Romance Of Sunsets

February 24th, 2012

The Romance Of Sunsets

Sunset is undeniably the most romantic time of the day.. but why?

Scientifically, sunsets are beautiful because of scattered light and air molecules. As the sun is setting, a beam of white light from the sun is separated by air molecules changing the colors of the sunlight. Because colors like blue and green have shorter wavelengths that spread them farther, making them less present and leaving a sky of orange and red.

Whatever it is about watching the sky change colors, reflecting over the passing day, or witnessing a beautiful event that can be completely different with each passing day, sunsets are mesmerizing!

Take a moment to enjoy some fantastic sunset images at any time of day here: link

Photographer Of The Week Ray Laskowitz

"I once photographed a painter whose work was brilliant and vibrant. When I asked him about it, he said "I am not afraid of color." Good words to live by, especially at a time when many photographs are judged by their technical strengths rather then the inherent joys of light, color, movement, emotion and engagement between the subject and the creator. I'm not afraid of color either.
My images are small slices of time, color and light. My images are bold. They pop. They are icons. They are captured moments. They shimmer. They move. They shine. They are bright. They are energetic."

I started out by telling stories as a photojournalist. As I moved into more commercial work, my worked moved from literal and documentary into something that reaches more into the heart of the scene. Something that might tell the viewer a little bit about me. Something that might tell the viewer about how the relationship between the subject and I evolve."

Happy Chinese New Year

January 26th, 2012

Happy Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a tradition that has been celebrated for centuries. It is a time for gathering around family and honoring ancestors.
The Chinese calendar is very complex, as it was set according to the lunar phases as well as the solar solstices and equinoxes, and is known to have been around as early as the 14th century. 2012 is actually year 4709 in the Chinese Calendar.
The five elements are also very important in Chinese Philosophy as they represent one's ability to interact with and create relationships between natural phenomena.
The Chinese Zodiac is the cycle of twelve signs determined according to the path of the sun, and assigned an animal characteristic.
The Dragon is known to be the mightiest of all the animal signs symbolizing dominance, ambition and success. In 2012, good fortune is said to come to those Dragons with water or earth elements.

You are a Dragon if you were born:

He overcame many obstacles traveling those two years for Kodak .. from a ruptured appendix in Singapore, earthquakes in Egypt, a plane crashing in Amsterdam, food-poisoning in India, his plane going off the runway into the water in Hong Kong, bombings close-by in England and Spain, just to name a few. Yet he returned from these trips with outstanding images.

Humpback Whale Season In Hawaii

January 10th, 2012

Humpback Whale Season In Hawaii

Every year during the moths of December to May, Hawaii is home to approximately 6,000 to 8,000 Humpback Whales. The whales travel all the way from the Gulf of Alaska to breed and give birth.

The Hawaiian Islands are all wonderful locations to view the majestic creatures, though the Auau Channel and the Maui Coast are the most populated due to the lack of pollution and large open space. While births are never seen, Calves can be spotted in late January and are commonly seen close to the shore.

At about 45 tons fully grown, it is hard to believe the whales are able to propel themselves several feet above water while breaching. Early morning and Late evening is the best chance to catch the whales in action; fluking and breaching.

Their talents also include singing. The male Humpbacks sing to seduce their mates, as well as to signal other whales while they hunt their prey as a group.

In Hawaii the Humpbacks, or 'Kohala's' are treasures as they are...

Volcanoes And Hawaii

Cool Volcanic Facts about Hawaii! Check out our images of Volcanoes at http://goo.gl/wMGRg

The Hawaiian Islands are composed entirely of volcanic rock. The craters and mountains we see above land are merely a fraction of the enormous volcanic topography that is resting thousands of feet below the ocean's surface.
With a total of 13 volcanoes throughout the Islands, they are a common site for locals. The Big Island of Hawaii holds 7 volcanoes total, there are 2 volcanoes each on Maui, Molokai and Oahu.

Here on Oahu, the landmarks we are known for such as Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and Koko Crater are all merely volcanic features of the Koolau volcano that makes up about two thirds of the island. The Waianae volcano is much taller than Koolau, as well as older, and towers over the windward side of Oahu.

Big Island's Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is home to two of the world's most active volcanoes: Mauna Loa and Kilauea

Hawaiian Waterfalls

Hawaiian Waterfalls

Aloha,

When most people think of Hawaii, tropical beaches come to mind, and even though it is true we are famous for our beaches we have much more to offer when it comes to natural beauty. Take our waterfalls for example; Hawaii is home to some of the world's most incredible waterfalls!

Mt. Wai'ale'ale Crater on Kauai is said to be one of, if not the wettest place on earth, receiving as much as 450 inches of rain every year! No wonder Kauai contains beautiful waterfalls such as Wailua, Opaekaa, and Waipoo falls. Though, the Garden Island's most breathtaking falls are only accessible by treacherous hikes or helicopter tours.

Oahu is not generally known for its waterfalls, but it does have some worth visiting; Manoa, Waimea and Manawili falls are all easy to access along short hiking trails.

Viewing The World Through The Eyes Of Joe Carini

He also participated in a book project along with 50 other international photographers titled SEVEN DAYS IN THE KINGDOM and also won a Honorable Mention and bronze medal from NIKON International. Joe's collection ranges from his stunning nature imagery to his breathtaking images from his tours of South East Asia and the Pacific Islands.
